#WOWWED: It's WOW Wednesday

It's WOW Wednesday! HR leaders, execs, and managers: How do you WOW the people who go above and beyond for you in your business? Or, how have you been WOWed?

Today's WOW Wednesday idea comes from Dustin. He says: "Our employees really enjoy the annual sports events we plan. Not only for the recognition value, but also for teambuilding and competition between remote site locations. We have a basketball tournament, fishing tournament, bowling tournament, etc.''

Recognition for Troup County Heroes

Terryberry is priviledged to have been involved in a ceremony in Troup County, Georgia on August 16th honoring three public service officers who exemplified heroic efforts, saving the lives of two citizens.

On June 29, 2011 Deputy Sherriff David Pasley jumped into a lake after a distraught woman jumped off of a boat dock in a possible suicide attempt. Deputy Pasley has very little swimming skills of his own, but acted selfless in a moment of need and was able to save the woman from drowning without even thinking twice.

On July 29, 2011 EMT Kevin Hendrix and Firefighter Rick Smith arrived at a boat access point on West Point Lake to find an elderly man clinging to the door of his sinking pick-up truck with trailer and boat attached. The elderly man and his truck had been submerged in the lake for close to an hour and a half after the truck’s engine shut off and the vehicle rolled into the water. The brave EMT and Firefighter immediately swam out to the victim and swam him 30 feet back to the shore.

One of the many ways that the Troup County chose to honor the three servicemen was by presenting them with Terryberry Honor Kits featuring a lapel pin. It is an honor to have been chosen to provide recognition to these men for their selfless acts of duty.

Special thanks to Dave Maurer, Lou Ann O’Brien, Roni Mason, Greg Butterfield, and all of the Terryberry “hands” that had a part in this very special award presentation.

#WOWWED: It's WOW Wednesday

It's WOW Wednesday! HR leaders, execs, and managers: How do you WOW the people who go above and beyond for you in your business? Or, how have you been WOWed?

Today's WOW Wednesday idea comes from Kimberly. She says: "As a non-profit organization our biggest challenge is having limited funds to do recognition events. Our most successful event is an Employee of the Month Crab Feast. (In Maryland, that's what we do!) However, with budget cuts we couldn't afford crabs this year. We thought the employees were going to take offense to such a time honored tradition, but they didn't. We held a hamburger/hot dog cookout with volleyball and got tremendous feedback. Employees said they felt even more appreciated by the fact that we still recognized them with an event, even if we weren't able to have a crab feast. It was a testament to the fact that employees appreciate recognition!"

Practicing What We Preach: Terryberry Employees' Recently Recognized

As a leading provider of solutions that help our clients create “great places to work” we are often asked about our own internal recognition programs and their effectiveness. At Terryberry we take our belief in a balanced approach to recognition to heart and have a number of formal, informal and day-to-day initiatives that drive real value for us.

As the National Sales Manager for Terryberry, I’ll focus on the impact our initiatives have on our nationwide sales force. Keep in mind these folks work in any number of environments from single team member home based offices to larger regional offices with 6-8 team members.

Throughout the year we utilize Give-a-WOW, so a large and geographically diverse sales force maintains a ‘family’ feel. Daily, our sales force interacts with each other as well as local and national support staff to recognize their successes. When it comes to achievement, no woman or man is an island, and peer-to-peer and team recognition is critical in fostering higher levels of engagement and winning effort.

We also recognize with a significant travel incentive that drives a ton of excitement all year. It is a huge honor to earn our annual spring trip and the spirit of that event drives a great deal of internal competition that directly impacts our corporate success.

Our recent National Sales Meeting provided ample opportunities for both informal and formal recognition. We work to maximize a culture of recognition throughout this annual event. For example, we ask for high levels of sales team participation. It is a big deal for our team members to be invited to present in front of their peers and the pats-on-the-back they receive after leading an impactful session are gratifying. These sessions also directly impact our corporate success, so it is a true win-win. The creation of the Terryberry Flight Team this year allowed us the opportunity to recognize the achievements of our top performers. Flight Team members were flown in private planes for a life changing aerial tour of the Grand Canyon. For many of our folks this was their first time to see the Canyon! Finally, we split our sales team service awards and our sales team performance awards into two distinctly different events. This strategy allows us the time to fully recognize and personalize the process and maximize the impact.

Maybe the best thing we do is work to keep things fresh. The structure of our year is similar from one year to the next, so the more creative we can be, the higher levels of performance we can earn from our tremendous people.

- Bill Bergstrom, National Sales Manager

Wow Generation Y in the Workplace with Employee Recognition

Imagine being 24-years-old and landing your first, big career opportunity. You go to work every day, eager to face new workplace challenges. You work hard and go above and beyond on each task that you’re assigned. At first, you do this with the hopes that someone will recognize your efforts and give you an even greater opportunity. But after a while, you start feeling like you’re wasting time because your talents and skills don’t seem to be getting the recognition they deserve.

This is how many Generation Y workers feel in today’s workplace. They’re ready to prove themselves on the job, but some of them feel like they’re not being challenged or utilized enough. Because of this, many companies are losing their best and brightest employees.

A recent survey in The San Francisco Chronicle showed that the average 26-year-old has changed jobs at least seven times since the age of 18. And the number one reason for switching jobs was that these individuals were just looking for a change. Companies today are struggling to hold on to Generation Y workers. These workers are walking out the door along with their bright ideas and talent.
Let Generation Y workers know that they are appreciated with employee recognition products and programs from Terryberry. Our innovative Give-a-WOW! online peer-to-peer recognition solution is fun, easy to use and allows Generation Y workers to get more involved in workplace culture. Terryberry’s RecognizeMe! products also allow you to recognize Generation Y workers on-the-spot and thank them for a job well done.

A Holiday Season to Invest In

The drumbeat continued today as an MSNBC article hit the web to report on how the economic downturn has corporations muting their holiday celebrations. There's little question that companies bailed out by your tax dollars ought to be prudent with their new-found lease on life, but killing opportunities to build morale and celebrate the efforts of those employees dedicated to righting the ship, is shortsighted.

According to Battalia Winston Amrop, only 81% of surveyed US companies plan to host a holiday celebration of some sort this year. That ties the lowest level in the 21 years of the survey (the tie is with 2008!). For many US business and organizations, both large and small, the holidays represent one of the few opportunities to get together on a 'global' scale. Often these gatherings include a chance to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of the workforce. Recognition builds the vital culture that is so important to an organizations success. Happy employees mean happy customers and meaningful celebrations of accomplishment are a big part of making employees happy.

In the MSNBC article, Marcia G. Rhodes of WorldatWork says, "It's all about the optics now." She is certainly referring to the image of a large & publically traded company, having been propped up by tax dollars, wastefully and indiscriminately spending on a meaningless party. I agree, a serious no-no.

That said I hope the prevailing approach of a few large companies doesn't become an easy "out" for other companies & their management across the country. Budgets are tight, but the smartest money any company can invest is in their employees. Use your holiday party this year to celebrate appropriately and it will set a tone for 2010. Dr. Debra J. Cohen of SHRM, may have said it best, "Effective recognition programs are usually a wise investment, and organizations that manage them well are going to benefit in a lot of different ways - and especially on the bottom line." (The WOW! Workplace)

This holiday don't sacrifice the wellbeing of your most important asset. Instead, invest in them through celebration and recognition!

Temporary and Contract Employees Need Recognition Too

Most employers have formal programs to recognize the contributions of their full-time and part-time employees. But what about the efforts of the workers who are on temporary assignment in your organization? For many businesses, temporary and contract workers contribute on many levels, adding value to the culture and the success of businesses they work for.

How does your organization motivate and engage your temporary and contract employees? How do you recognize their contributions? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Last week was National Staffing Employee Week, honoring contract and temporary employees in the US. Read about the 2010 National Staffing Employee of the Year. http://www.americanstaffing.net/newsroom/newsreleases/sept_14_09.cfm
