Caring Committee Offers Recognition for Work & Life

It's WOW Wednesday! HR leaders, execs, and managers: How do you WOW the people who go above and beyond for you in your business? Or, how have you been WOWed?

Today's WOW Wednesday idea comes from Jaquilyn in Rogers, MN. She says:
"We have created a Caring Committee at work where we not only recognize those employees that deserve praise for work they have done, but this committee recognizes employees that are going through life changes (deaths in the family, divorce, new babies, etc). We send out cards and notes to them so that they know they are still being recognized through caring co-workers."

#WOWWED: It's WOW Wednesday

It's WOW Wednesday! HR leaders, execs, and managers: how do you WOW the people who go above and beyond for you in your business? Or, how have you been WOWed?

Today's WOW Wednesday idea comes from Lewis.
Lewis shared his recognition story with us by posting on Terryberry's facebook page. "An employee of ours found a wallet in the restroom with $1000 dollars in it and turned it in to the manager. When the customer came in and found the money was still in the wallet she sent a very nice letter to the office. We sent out a letter of recognition to the employee that was framed and gave her a check for $100. The cutomer was happy, the employee was happy, and we have received more letters about employees since then because the employees are going out of their way to do other things for the guests."

Erin received Terryberry's Recognize Me! Performance Kit - Everything you need to motivate, congratulate, and recognize employees in the moment. Erin said, "We use Service Excellence and each month a team of employees goes through the nominations submitted by peers/supervisors/patients/visitors and we determine the level of recognition - every nomination gets $1 buck to spend and some get $2 - $3 depending on the nomination and then some people depending on the level of SE get recognized at a lunch and one special nomination gets the Circle of Excellence award and that has to be a really outstanding effort - we don't have these every month! Once we make decisions on the SE winners we do balloon patrol and recognize these outstanding individuals by delivering a balloon bouquet to them with an invitation to the lunch - this is done during the work day and in front of their peers!"

Sigrid received a copy of "The WOW! Workplace" by Mike Byam. In this book, you'll find page after page of real-world recognition ideas from top businesses. A practical guide and great training tool for management teams. Sigrid said, "I had a site that focused on breakfast, specifically about pigs. Chickens and cows offer a lot but pigs (bacon), they are committed. Anytime someone was discovered doing something that was really committed to the organization, they received some type of pig item. There were pig stickers for your EE badge that were coveted by all!"

On-the-Spot Recognition...anyone can do it!

Most managers believe that appreciation leads to better staff motivation, yet 86% of company leaders say that their organization's managers could be doing a better job of recognizing and thanking employees for good work. If everyone agrees that recognition is so important to the success of a business, why are so many businesses lacking in this area?

Much of the problem boils down to two popular myths that have wormed their way into many businesses.

Myth 1: managers don't have time for recognition.

Myth 2: managers don't know how to do it.

The truth is anyone can thank or congratulate an employee for a job well done, and it doesn't have to compromise the other tasks that fill up the to-do list. Here are three tips for making spot recognition a part of your daily schedule without getting in the way of other obligations.

1. Jot it down: When was the last time you received a hand-written note of appreciation? Chances are, you held onto it for days, weeks or even years. Make an appointment once a week to write a quick note of appreciation to a coworker for a contribution or achievement you noticed. It can be just a couple of lines and it doesn't have to take more than a couple of minutes, but the impact will be worth it.

2. Use two little words: Thank you. You can't use them often enough. Thank employees for the ways they contribute, even if it's a part of their expected job function. Appreciating people and valuing their work means they'll be more willing to contribute in the future.

3. Remind yourself to recognize: Keep a recognition reminder visible in your work area. maybe it's a stack of note cards or an icon on your desktop. Get regular recognition reminders and tips when you follow Terryberry on twitter. If you remind yourself daily to look for ways that employees are contributing, you'll get in the habit in no time.
